China was South Africa’s largest import origin in the SARS August 2026 overview. This guide is for South African buyers discussing LC terms with Chinese suppliers. It does not establish a supplier relationship, stock availability or approved bank coverage.
Ask whether the contracting supplier, invoice issuer and LC beneficiary are the same legal entity. If a trading company or another beneficiary is involved, explain the relationship to the provider. Obtain the supplier’s accepted bank and wording requirements before agreeing the payment method.
Agree the goods specification, shipment deadline, transport documents and any independent inspection certificate. Confirm whether an invoice is quoted on FOB, CIF or another Incoterm and identify who arranges freight and insurance. Do not treat the LC as confirmation of goods quality.
Select South Africa as applicant country only if that is where your applicant business is based, and China as supplier country where applicable. Enter the invoice currency without converting it to ZAR yourself. We assess issuer acceptance, security, fees and timing individually; availability is not guaranteed.
Start with your supplier quotation or contract, amount, currency and deadline. Sensitive company and identity documents are requested privately.
