Does a Letter of Credit protect against poor-quality goods?

Learn why LCs pay against documents, how inspection certificates can help and what buyers should agree before shipment.

Request a trade finance review

Approval, security, issuer acceptance and timing are assessed individually. International enquiries do not establish country coverage.

Documents are not the goods

A documentary LC provides for payment against documents that comply with its terms. Banks do not inspect the shipment themselves. Compliant documents can trigger payment before the buyer receives or personally inspects the goods.

Agree meaningful inspection requirements

Where appropriate, require a certificate from a named independent inspector. Agree the inspection location and timing, goods specification, tests or checks and the document to be presented. An undefined request for “inspection” may not provide the protection you expect.

Understand the limits of a certificate

A certificate can support documentary evidence of an agreed inspection. It does not eliminate fraud, hidden defects or all contractual disputes. The scope may cover only sampling or specific checks. Confirm what has actually been inspected and keep contractual remedies separate.

Prepare the draft before production or shipment

Ask the supplier, inspector and issuer to review workable document requirements before the LC is issued. Buyer approval after delivery is not a standard LC feature and can create conditions a supplier will not accept. Get transaction-specific advice on the proposed wording.

Prepare your next step

Start with your supplier quotation or contract, amount, currency and deadline. Sensitive company and identity documents are requested privately.
