A documentary Letter of Credit (LC) is a bank undertaking to pay a supplier against documents that meet the credit’s terms. It can help a buyer and seller agree payment arrangements for a new trading relationship. Your supplier must accept the issuing bank and the wording.
MarketDirect.co.za helps you prepare the transaction and connect with suitable providers for assessment. We do not issue the bank instrument ourselves.
Ask your supplier for a proforma invoice, beneficiary details and proposed payment terms. Agree the goods description, shipment deadline, document requirements and whether payment is at sight or on a specified future date. Ask the provider to explain discrepancy, amendment and expiry risks before accepting the draft.
Banks examine documents, not the physical goods. An LC does not automatically guarantee quality or require your approval after delivery. If an independent inspection certificate is needed, agree the inspector, inspection scope and certificate requirements before the LC is issued.
Collateral, cash cover, fees and reimbursement terms depend on assessment. An LC is not automatically a loan to pay for goods, freight or duties. Tell us separately if you need working capital. Issuance and supplier acceptance are not guaranteed.
Start with your supplier quotation or contract, amount, currency and deadline. Sensitive company and identity documents are requested privately.
